The Messenger – October 2014

Our former Presiding Bishop, Mark Hanson, asked this question:  “If your congregation ceased to exist today, what would you and your neighborhood miss?”

So, to paraphrase, I ask you:  If Luther Memorial did not exist, if tomorrow we simply went out of business, what difference would that make in your life?

Of course, I have my own answers and I know that you do too.  But for these next few moments, I invite you to join me in considering this question.  Then, over the course of the next several weeks, we will have the opportunity to talk together about this and to share our answers in a variety of different ways.

A part of this consideration will be in preparation for our Annual Meeting, as we think about and plan for the coming year.  But the way we think about this question will also inform our continued visioning and discernment as we listen for God’s call to us.

To the first question, I add a second:  Where do you see God at work in our neighborhood?  Not just in what we are doing as a congregation, but where is God at work in the neighborhood?

Know that YOU are a vital person in the life of this congregation, just because of who you are, God’s beloved child.

Faithfully,

Pastor Julie Hutson
